Hild Fisherman’s Village

I’m going to be honest, this hotel was not on my radar when looking for places to stay in Iceland but it ended up being a pleasant surprise. Hild Fisherman’s Village is located is Alftanes on the west side of Iceland about 20 minutes from Reykjavík tucked in on a peninsula. This hotel gives you a nice sense of seclusion while also still being close to the city.

THE PROPERTY

While driving to the property, you pass through a lovely neighborhood with beautiful well kept and well designed houses. To your right is a lovely body of water with walking trails along it. I could tell this was an idilic neighborhood to live in Iceland. When you drive into the hotel, you immediately understand why it is called Fisherman’s Village. It feels exactly like a tiny village where fishermen would lay their heads at night. Each room is it’s own little cabin with front door and key and the property is decorated so uniquely with fishing lines, nets and buoys. There is literally even a shored fishing boat on the property. Near the entrance there is a set of steps and there you will find a rooftop hot tub and sauna with seating areas and a peaceful view of the ocean.

THE ROOM

I was so in love with our room. Each room is decorated and designed differently.  We stay in cabin 18 and when you walk in you’re greeted with a living area which had a bedroom up some stairs. There’s a hallways that leads to another bedroom in the back with another sleeping area on top. The little couch in the living room converted to a twin bed and they even organized for us to have baby crib in the room. The girls slept on the pull out couch and crib respectively as they are too young to sleep uptairs just yet. The best part of our room was that there was a sauna in our bathroom. Not all the rooms have saunas so if you stay here I would opt for room 18. We used the sauna every night and it was glorious. Also right outside our room was another hot tub on the property which made it feel private to us. We just had to open our back door and BAM, hot tub. Our daughters favorite thing to do was get in the hot tub after dinner. It was a nice way to end the night. The bathroom also had heated floors which seems to be a norm in Iceland and something I absolutely adored. This room would be perfect if you are staying more then 4 people or older children as we ended up not using both beds on the second floor.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD + FOOD

I mentioned a bit about the immediate neighborhood which is mostly residential. You have to drive at least 10 minutes out to reach any type of store or food place. There is no food option on the property or kitchenette to cook so you have to venture out for your meals. You can however head to their sister property Viking Hotel for their free breakfast which is about a 10 minute drive away. For dinner we tried a nearby restaurant called Mossley and it was really good. Danny got the burger, I got the veggie burger and the girls were loving their fish and chips. The food options were more bar food style and the restaurant was very casual which was what we were looking for. It was also nice to eat in a location that was more for locals. If you want more options you can venture a little further, about 20 minutes, into Reykjavík where there are a ton of delicious food options.

This hotel seems like nothing special if you look it up online but truly it was one of our favorite places we stayed and one of those places that’s better in person. It was really cozy and felt like our little home for the two nights we stayed. The views are absolutely stunning as you’re nestled right on a peninsula. If you don’t mind venturing out for food, I would say it’s a perfect hotel to visit parts of southern and western Iceland and then come home to a cozy little home on the water (and you’re own sauna! Still not over it haha). Benefits of staying right outside Reykjavík is that the prices of the hotels drop significantly so although I do love how walkable it is when you stay right in the city, I totally think it’s worth the price to stay right outside the city and get the best of both worlds.
